Canada’s 2030 Greenhouse Gas Emission Target is Unachievable – What should Civil Society do about it?

In-person and Online

29/03/2023, 7:00 pm - TO 29/03/2023 - 8:00 pm

Organizer: Alumni Engagement Office (in partnership with The Centre for Climate Change)

My Calendar

This talk will present an update on and an action-oriented breakdown of Canadian greenhouse gas emissions, the Canadian 2030 Climate Action Plan and the prospects for achieving our targets, the global outlook, and what concerned citizens can do about it. Central to the discussion will be the need to avoid actions that make other problems worse and which do not represent sustainable, long-term solutions to the global warming problem.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Danny Harvey is a Professor in the Department of Geography, University of Toronto, where he teaches courses related to climate, global warming and energy use. He completed his PhD in the area of climate modelling at the Department of Geography, University of Toronto, in 1985, and during the 1980s and 1990s his work focused on climate and carbon cycle modelling, with a particular interest in the global-scale impacts on climate of alternative emission scenarios. He published two textbooks on the science of global warming in the late 1990s, one for undergraduate students and one for graduate students.

During the 2000s, his work began a transition to questions related to energy use and how to make the transition to a fossil-fuel free energy system worldwide within this century. In 2006 he published A Handbook on Low-Energy Buildings and District Energy Systems: Fundamentals, Techniques, and Examples (Earthscan, 701 pages), and in 2010 he published (also with Earthscan) the 2-volume work, Energy and the New Reality, Volume 1: Energy Efficiency and the Demand for Energy Services (614 pages) and Volume 2: Carbon-Free Energy Supply, which develops options for stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations over the next few decades. Since then he has been publishing actively in areas related to eliminating greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation and buildings sectors, and most recently, has been examining options for decarbonizing the steel industry. He is a Deputy Editor of the journal Climatic Change and was a lead author of the IPCC 4th (2007) and 5th (2014) Assessment Reports, Mitigation Working Group.
