The Wilson Institute for Canadian History and the School of Labour Studies are hosting a book launch and wine & cheese to celebrate the publication of David Goutor’s new book, A Chance to Fight Hitler: A Canadian Volunteer in the Spanish Civil War.

All are welcome.

A Chance to Fight Hitler is a fascinating story and testament to the idea that large-scale history is always intertwined with our personal stories. Here is how David describes this project:

“It’s a biography of my wife’s grandfather, who was, as he put it, “an average person” but he lived an extraordinary and inspiring life. He grew up in the times of upheaval in Germany in the 1920s, survived the worst of the Depression years in Winnipeg in the early 1930s, drove a truck for the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War, and had to scramble for his life to get back to Canada. It’s a great story and I have tried for, well, quite a while to do it justice.”
