Ethnic minorities and indigenous peoples are gradually being elected and included in politics. Yet, we still do not know enough of the best way to meaningfully strengthen minority group rights, mitigate ethnic conflict, or improve the substantive representation of diverse groups.

Over the next three days, more than 30 international and Canadian scholars will gather in McMaster University to study how the design of institutional measures such as ethnic quotas and reserved seats in legislatures and other political bodies improve the interests of ethnic minorities and indigenous groups.
