“Art, Popular Culture and Feminist Organizing: The 2017 Women’s March”, a Talk by: Dr. Aida Hurtado

On January 22, 2017, the Women’s March took place in Washington, DC. Over 4 million gathered in DC, the rest of the country, and worldwide. The march organizers intentionally used the feminist framework of intersectionality to guide the mobilization. The vehicle they used to manifest intersectionality in organizing was art and popular culture. In my presentation, I will explore the power of these tools and this framework as proposed by Chicana feminist writers. My purpose is to use my talk as a starting point for an engaged conversation of what we can bring to the current social, political, and economic situation we are experiencing. As public intellectuals, we are operating under the “politics of urgency” as we confront multiple axes of inequality in our own countries and worldwide.
