The province tabled its 2010 budget yesterday reinforcing its long-term commitment to post secondary education and its belief in the important role higher education plays in Ontario's future prosperity.
Ontario is providing $248 million to Ontario's universities to fund 11,000 new student spaces that begin this fall. Details on how those funds will be disbursed have yet to be made known but the investment will significantly improve access to students hoping to attend university.
"In difficult economic times we appreciate these important government investments and the province's recognition that a strong post secondary system is critical to Ontario's future," says President Peter George. "The investments in new student spaces will help to increase Ontario's future competitiveness and productivity. Additional year-end funds are much-needed and appreciated especially given the tough financial times. They will be helpful in our efforts to responsibly manage our finances for this fiscal year."
The University will also be working with the province to clarify the provisions in the budget concerning compensation restraint in the public sector. The legislation will include universities but the details are not yet confirmed. The potential for changes to pension legislation could also help provide future pension funding relief.
The budget also provides investments in several initiatives that are important to McMaster and Hamilton. Ontario will introduce a Water Opportunities Act to support development of new technologies for water conservation and treatment and to promote Ontario's water technology sector at home and for the export market. McMaster has recognized expertise and research strength in water that involves areas across campus and partnerships within the city.
The government is committed to moving forward on other key initiatives including recruitment of more international students, on-line education and credit transfers between institutions.
"McMaster has been at the forefront of creating university/college partnerships that provide unique pathways for students and we look forward to opportunities to work with the province and college partners as these programs develop," says George.
