A new public lecture series at McMaster is aiming to teach members of the community
how to live more sustainable lifestyles.
Sustainability 101 will kick off Thursday with a talk on sustainability in the community
by environmental consultant Peter Ormond.
The student-organized lecture series is being run through the Xerox Centre for
Engineering Entrepreneurship & Innovation and the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Centre for
Engineering & Public Policy, part of the Walter G. Booth School of Engineering Practice
within McMaster's engineering faculty. The Centres both support developments in eco-
entrepreneurship.
“The Booth School is committed to placing an emphasis on sustainability initiatives,”
said Zane Kharas, the lead organizer of Sustainability 101 and a recent graduate of the
Booth School's Engineering Entrepreneurship and Innovation master's degree program.
“A new chair was recently created at the Booth School specifically for eco-
entrepreneurship. It really indicates how much these lectures fit in to the School's
objectives.”
Future speakers and their lectures include:
* Claude Ouimet, senior vice-president and general manager, InterfaceFLOR-
“Sustainability in Business” on Monday, January 31;
* John Wilson, vice-president operations, Bullfrog Power-“Sustainability in the Home”
on Thursday, February 17; and
* Lee Norton of The Climate Project-“Sustainable Solutions to Climate Change” on
Thursday, March 3.
All lectures are open to the public and free of charge. They will run from 7-8:30 p.m.
on their respective dates in Gilmour Hall, Room 111 (Council Chambers), at McMaster
University.
“These lectures are meant to share practical ideas that we can all apply to help achieve
a more sustainable society, whether at school, at work, or at home,” said Kharas.
“Organizing the series has also given a number of students, from undergraduates to
recent graduates, exposure to environmental isssues, which will benefit all of us who
are just starting our careers.”
