Charlotte Yates' reappointment was confirmed by the Board of Governors,
ratifying a unanimous recommendation from the selection committee.
“Under Dean Yates' leadership, the Faculty of Social Sciences has strengthened its deep
connections to our communities, engaged students and faculty in new ways of teaching,
learning and research and has ensured McMaster is well-positioned to advance our
priorities,” said Ilene Busch-Vishniac, provost and vice-president academic.
“The next five years will be exciting for the study of liberal arts at McMaster,” Dean
Yates said. “With the public and private investments in the new L.R. Wilson Hall which
will be home to social sciences and humanities, and our ongoing commitment to
engaging our students in our communities, there is a great deal of momentum within
social sciences.”
Among the Faculty's many accomplishments over the past five years, Yates said the
increased activities addressing poverty issues and the expansion and enhancement of
pathways for students are significant achievements.
Charlotte Yates first arrived on campus in 1987, when she joined the Labour Studies
Program and political science department. Prior to her appointment as dean, she served
as director of the Labour Studies Program and has held many positions on community
boards, organizations and groups including the Coalition on Fair Income and
Employment. She is regularly called on by national and international media to provide
expert commentary on labour and automotive industry issues and has written several
books and dozens of papers.
She holds a PhD in political science from Carleton University and a master's from
Queen's University.
