‘Good morning, sunshine!’ — Here’s what makes people at Mac happy

What’s something – or someone – that makes you happy at McMaster?

That’s what we asked people on campus in the leadup to March 20, the International Day of Happiness. Here’s what they had to say:

A young man stands on an empty road, holding a bicycle. A few people are walking across the road the background.

Xin Law-Gallagher: Fourth-year Arts and Science

“I love how the bikes are pretty much free,” said Law-Gallagher. He uses the Hamilton Bike Share to get everywhere — “to campus, between classes, between places on campus.”

Merry Samawi: Fourth-year, combined Honours in Global Peace and Social Justice, minor in Sociology

Samawi’s answer was her history professor, Mason Godden.

“He is the best professor I’ve had at Mac,” Samawai said. “He’s a very understanding and accommodating professor. It’s a pleasure to go to his lectures…. he explains the readings and everything very well.”

“These ladies right here, my roommates, they make me happy,” said Taylor. The three met in their first year in residence and have lived together since then.

Isha Verma: Master of Global Health

“I just ran into one of my friends and we haven’t seen each other in a while, so we got to catch up,” Verma said. “I like the community feel that McMaster has … everyone is very friendly.”

Terri Marshall: Hospitality Services

If there was a prize for the person on campus who spreads the most joy, it might go to Terri Marshall. She’s most commonly seen laughing in the checkout lane of La Piazza in MUSC.

“The students,” make her happy, Marshall said. “Their mornings when they come in tired, and the surprised look on their face when I say ‘Good morning’ or whatever and wake them up!”
