McMaster University's School of the Arts will present a new production of the comedic rock musical, The Destruction of Eve, beginning Saturday, Nov. 13, at 8 p.m., in Robinson Memorial Theatre. The play, which had a successful run in Toronto in 1998, challenges our preconceptions of self, God, the bible, and women in western civilization.

The Destruction of Eve, written by the late Canadian playwright and noted director Svetlana Zylin, combines a wry sense of humour with an amusing, thought-provoking, feminist take on the biblical myth of Eve. Mary Magdalene, Lilith (Adam's original mate), Eve and the Virgin Mary find themselves an involuntary foursome in Heaven's reception area after each is blessed with a “Holy Summons”. Forced to wait on the will of God, they confront one another and deconstruct the myths perpetuated through time. God comes out in all “her” glory and all “Hell” breaks loose.

Canadian composer and singer Connie Kaldor created original scores for the songs. School of the Arts faculty member Cynthia Grant serves as director and producer following a distinguished career in Canadian theatre as founding Artistic Director of Nightwood Theatre and Company of Sirens. Musical direction is by singer and composer David Sereda.

The cast features Marisa Cavataio as Eve, Nea Reid as Virgin Mary, Natalie Dukich as God, Christine Wallis as Mary Magdalene, Abby Siris as Lilith and Simon De Abreu as Uriel.

The show previews Nov. 11 and 12 and opens Saturday, Nov. 13 at 8 pm. It runs: Wed. Nov. 17 to Sat. Nov. 20, 8 p.m. Matinees: Sunday, Nov. 14 and 21 at 2 p.m.

Venue: Robinson Memorial Theatre, Chester New Hall, McMaster University.
