McMaster scholar awarded Killam Research FellowshipMcMaster professor Walter Craig, a Canada Research Chair of Mathematics Analysis and its Applications, is one of nine outstanding Canadian researchers to be awarded a Killam Research Fellowship. Awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts, the fellowship holds a value of $140,000 over two years and will enable Craig to devote two-years to full-time research.

TB vaccine developed at McMaster UniversityMcMaster University researchers are about to launch Canada's first tuberculosis (TB) vaccine clinical trial with a vaccine totally designed, manufactured and tested within McMaster. "The exciting thing for McMaster is that this is translational research that has gone from the basic science where the vector has been designed here at McMaster, then manufactured here, with all the pre-clinical studies done at McMaster," said Dr. Fiona Smaill, a professor of medicine and chair of the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine.

Student club raises $7,000 for MacWheelersMac Cares, a new student club focused on assisting disabled people, recently donated $7,000 to the MacWheelers, a specialized fitness and wellness program for people with spinal cord injury run by the kinesiology department. The funds received by MacWheelers will be used to purchase a Nu Step, a special piece of exercise equipment that allows people with paralysis to exercise their whole body - an important method to keep those with spinal cord injury fit and healthy.

French department hosts international conferenceFrench scholars from across the globe will congregate at McMaster for an international conference titled, Aime Cesaire: dialogues contemporains avec le monde francophone (Aime Cesaire: Contemporary Dialogues with the Francophone World). As part of its efforts to make campus dining more sustainable, Hospitality Services has introduced a number of eco-friendly initiatives that help both the environment and the local economy. These include providing oxo-biodegradable cutlery and take-out containers made from renewable resources, as well as purchasing local and organic produce for campus meals.

Bike trailer duo take second at National Engineering CompetitionLindsey Kettel and Cory Minkhorst took second place for their collapsible bicycle trailer invention at the Canadian Engineering Competition held in Fredericton. They were also recipients of the Environmental Awareness award. The two fifth-year mechanical engineering and management students were one of eight university engineering teams competing in the innovation category. They qualified for the national event by winning their category at the Ontario Engineering Competition, which was held in February.

Student-run musical shines spotlight on health sciences programLily is a health sciences student stuck in the middle of a love triangle. She can't seem to choose between Rosco, an ambitious medical student, and her sweet-tempered classmate, Jim. It may sound like a typical 20-something love story, but inject some singing, dancing and a virus that renders people without a sense of rhythm and what you get is Viva La Virus, a new musical written, directed and performed by students in the Bachelor of Health Sciences (B.H.Sc.) program at McMaster University.
