ShAIDS of Grey hits Toronto theatre

Care for Underprivileged Refugee Empowerment (CURE Canada) is taking its landmark original theatrical production ShAIDS of Grey on the road to Toronto. After a successful first run in Hamilton, ShAIDS will be travelling down the QEW for a three-night run at the Betty Oliphant Theatre and CURE could not be more excited.

School-based physical activity programs provide some health benefits

School-based physical activity programs are more likely to get kids moving during school hours, but have little impact on activity levels outside of class, according to a new review by a McMaster University researcher. Maureen Dobbins, an associate professor at McMaster University's School of Nursing, was the lead researcher on a review that looked at the benefits of physical activity programs in schools.

President Peter George named to Order of Ontario

McMaster University President Peter George was invested as a member of the Order of Ontario yesterday at Queen's Park. He was appointed to the Order in December 2007 President George, who is also a member of the Order of Canada, was honoured for his role as McMaster's President and Vice-Chancellor, and his contributions to post-secondary education, his community and as an economist and author. President George joined McMaster's faculty in 1965. He became president in 1995 and is currently serving his third five-year term.

Fifth annual Apprentice competition kicks off at DeGroote

The DeGroote School of Business' annual MARS Apprentice competition kicked off on January 20. For the next six weeks, 12 undergraduate commerce students will be completing challenges from JAN Kelley Marketing, BlackBerry and Rogers Communications, RBC Royal Bank, Frito Lay and Canadian Tire Financial Services with the goal of winning coveted full-time paid internships at sponsor companies.

Halton approves McMaster expansion

Halton Regional Council has endorsed McMaster's plan to expand to the region, approving a $5 million investment in the Burlington campus project and providing the final municipal funding required for the plan to proceed.

More potential students choosing McMaster

Applications to McMaster have risen at twice the rate of the provincial average and the number of students naming McMaster as their first choice has risen by more than 8%. "It's a strong signal that students want to be at McMaster and that the University has the programs, facilities and activities that are high on their list," says McMaster registrar Richard Levin.

Students camp out in library for charity

Second year philosophy student Jeremy Landon and second year English student Shazeen Dhala normally spend plenty of time in McMaster's campus libraries; however, over the next ten days the pair will be taking it to the extreme as they camp out 24-7 in the lobby of Mills Memorial Library to support the 2009 Live in for Literacy campaign, raising money to help construct nine school libraries in India through a charity called Room to Read.

The more promiscuous the female, the speedier the sperm

Female promiscuity appears to have triggered changes in the type of sperm a male produces, according to new research on fish from central Africa. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, examines how competition for reproduction influences the sperm of many species of African cichlids. These fish have extremely diverse mating behaviours, ranging from strict monogamy to species where females mate with many males in quick succession.

Rick Mercer pays a visit to McMaster

McMaster University will be the focus of the hugely popular The Rick Mercer Report, which is set to air Tuesday evening on CBC. Rick Mercer - Canadian comedian and political satirist - was on campus last week for a full day of filming, which included a conversation with McMaster president Peter George, some scuffles on the squash courts, a brush with a bat, a simulated operation with McMaster's robotic patients, some laughs with professor-astronaut, Dr. Dave Williams, and plenty of gags with the students.

Three new exhibits of German Art at McMaster Museum of Art

Three new exhibitions at the McMaster Museum of Art - Albrecht Durer, Die Brucke and Before the Fall of the Berlin Wall - comprising works by historical and contemporary German masters will set this right.
