McMaster wrestler receives McLeod Scholarship

McMaster wrestler Stefanie Howorun has received the Bob McLeod Scholarship for the 2004/05 academic year, from the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association.

The 2004 Canadian Junior National Champion (at 67 kg) recently placed third at the CIS Championship and will compete in her first senior national championship this upcoming May in Renfrew, Ontario.

The native of Brampton, Ontario was coached by Kevin Lomas of the Matmen Wrestling Club prior to entering McMaster. She is now coached by Nick Cipriano and Rob Betz.

The second-year kinesiology student plans to attend the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College upon graduation. Her wrestling goals including competing for a position on the senior national team and one day representing Canada at the Olympics. She says this is a long-term goal and is willing to work to achieve it.

Her coach, Nick Cipriano says: “Over the past year, Stefanie has made tremendous progress and her goal of making the national team is realistic and achievable.”

The Bob McLeod Scholarship is named after the long-serving executive member of the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association who passed away in 1987. It is awarded annually to an age group national champion who has combined their wrestling pursuits with a solid academic performance.
