McMaster student Chelsey Gotell of Antigonish, N.S. struck gold twice at the Paralympics, winning a second gold medal, her fifth overall, on Sunday. Gotell scored a world record time in the women's 100-metre backstroke for the visually impaired, finishing in 1:09.09, beating the previous world record of 1:09.28 set by Yvonne Hopf of Germany.

“This is the event that I came here for,” Gotell told the Canadian Press. “All the hard work I put into it paid off.”

Gotell finished first in the 200-metre individual medley SM13 classification in a world record time of two minutes 28.15 seconds. She was followed by Winnipeg's Kirby Cote in 2:28.65 and Montreal's Valerie Grand'Maison in 2:29.29.

“I don't now where that race came from,” said Gotell, after capturing her fourth medal of the competition. “I'm so happy that we swept another race. The whole team is faster than ever. In this category, the three of us push each other so much. If it wasn't for the other two girls I wouldn't be here with that gold today.”
