As of Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005 the Forsyth Avenue extension is reopened and traffic can once again fully access the MUMC entrance and parking garage from Main Street as well as King Street.

Since work began in April, a new University Avenue has been constructed and extensive work to move the entrance to the University and the McMaster University Medical Centre (MUMC) to align with the Emerson Street intersection at Main Street. All of this was co-ordinated with the City of Hamilton's reconstruction of Main Street West at the same time with a deadline of August 31 before students arrive for the school year.

“The new entrance provides improved safety for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists and enhances the University campus,” says Karen Belaire, vice-president administration. “Thank you to everyone who endured the inconvenience of detours and traffic delays that occurred in the process of completing this project. Your patience and co-operation is greatly appreciated.”

The new Main Street entrance provides improved access for visitors to the University and individuals travelling to MUMC. McMaster parking permit holders will continue to use the Sterling Street entrance.

HSR routes return to regular schedules and bus stops effective Aug. 17, 2005.

Remaining work at the corner of College Crescent and the old University Avenue will be completed this week. Access for traffic and the campus shuttle bus on College Crescent will resume on Monday, Aug. 22.

The City of Hamilton has also completed work on the reconstruction of Main Street West. The new intersection at Main and Emerson is fully operational and now provides the only access point to the University and MUMC from Main Street.
