“John is an outstanding leader,” says provost Ken Norrie. “He brings to the position a strong research and teaching background, experience in the development and administration of the University, and the vision and enthusiasm that will be important components of the Faculty's future success.”

Capone arrived at McMaster in 1978 as a PhD student. He then spent three years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before rejoining McMaster as an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry in 1986. He was appointed a full professor in 1995 and from 1997 to 2000 served as chair of the Department. Since 2000 he has been the associate dean, research, in the Faculty of Health Sciences, which has seen significant growth and advancement during his tenure.

“I am honored and privileged with the opportunity to lead the Faculty of Science, a Faculty that is core to McMaster's reputation of excellence and innovation,” said Capone. “I'm excited at the prospect of working with faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders in advancing outstanding leading-edge programs in education, scholarship and research, and in forging new partnerships with the broader community.”

Capone's appointment has been confirmed by Senate Executive and the Board of Governors.
