Healthy Workplace Month brings wellness to mind

The month is dedicated each year to increasing awareness about the importance of workplace health to personal and organizational performance.

Once again, McMaster's Healthy Workplace Group and Employee Health Services have organized a roster of informative and exciting events designed to help employees take the first steps to improving their own health.

McMaster's theme this year is “Bringing Wellness to Mind” and we encourage you to take some time to get involved in one of the many opportunities to bring wellness to your mind and take advantage of the resources at your disposal.

Highlights of the month include:

  • Tackling Workplace Stress:Back by popular demand, a keynote address by Mary Ann Baynton, director of Mental Health Works on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

  • Annual Employee Health Fair: An employee favourite is back again in 2008. This year's fair will mark the end of Healthy Workplace Month. It will spotlight multiple health resources and give you an opportunity to focus on your area of interest.

    The fair also offers health screening, including blood pressure, bone density, BMI, pulmonary function testing and blood typing. Participants will be eligible for prize draws for an iPod Shuffle, camping gear, a $400 hybrid bicycle and many more. Light refreshments and healthy treats will be available.

  • Employee Health Challenge:Registration is now open. The health challenge encourages participants to make positive lifestyle changes through five weeks of wellness activities, tips and information. The challenge begins Monday, Sept. 29, and the top 10 teams and top 10 individual participants with the most accumulated points are eligible for weekly prizes.   • Healthy Workplace Ambassador Award:The Health Workplace Ambassador Award is a new annual recognition program administered by Employee Health Services. This award is designed to recognize and reward an employee who has demonstrated unequaled personal effort to foster employee health and well-being and facilitated health improvements in other McMaster employees.
