Football alumni compete for Hawkrigg Cup

With more than 60 players, including students and alumni, competing for the Hawkrigg Cup trophy, there was some heat on McMaster's new turf-covered Alumni Field, despite the sub-zero temperatures.

The Hawkrigg Cup was named after Chancellor Dr. Mel Hawkrigg who played varsity football, hockey, basketball and ran track at McMaster University. He earned his BA at McMaster University in 1952 before joining the Hamilton Tiger Cats Football Club. The trophy was named after Hawkrigg to honour his dedication to McMaster University and in particular McMaster Athletics.

Although there were eight hungry teams competing for the Hawkrigg Cup, there could be only one victor. The 2007 Hawkrigg Cup champions were led by 2001 Hec Creighton award winner, Ben Chapdelaine, who has won the trophy for the second time.

His fellow teammates include Ryan Janzen, Dave Linton, Mike Linton, Ray Mariuz (who have also won the trophy for the second time), Jon Behie, Kyle Pyear and head coach Greg Muldoon.

Thanks to all the participants for making this year's event such a great success despite the blustery winds and freezing cold temperatures. Jack Frost is no competition for McMaster University flag football athletes.
