Employers are eager to meet and hire Mac students at the Online Fall Career Fair
Students are looking for jobs. Employers are hiring. And this year, McMaster’s annual fall career fair is moving online and expanding to two days to help connect them.
More than 70 employers will be participating in the Online Fall Career Fair, which will be held on September 16 and 17 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Students are welcome to virtually drop in and connect with their employer of choice, who will be offering a broad range of jobs including full-time, part-time, co-op and internship positions.
“The current labour market is very competitive; students can now compete not only for local opportunities but also globally, as everything is done online,” says Gisela Oliveira, associate director of skill development and international student support at the Student Success Centre (SSC). “It is now more important than ever for our students and alumni to show up with their A-game on, make a good first impression and network, network, network.”
While the SSC has been offering virtual events for the past five years, virtual career fairs may be something new for many students — just one of the many firsts they may be facing as they navigate the 2020-2021 academic year and the current job market online.
“Connecting directly with employers can feel intimidating in any situation, and then adding the newness of a virtual fair platform can add another layer of uncertainty,” explains Kerri Latham, a lead career counsellor with the SSC. “However, adaptability and curiosity are sought-after skills, so this fair is a great opportunity for students to not only connect with employers but to put their curiosity and adaptability into action.”
