The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology has changed the guidelines for personal
activity. Audrey Hicks, professor of kinesiology at McMaster, is also president of the
Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology.
According to Hicks, the new guidelines are clearer and easier to follow than the old
set, allowing Canadians to better understand what they need to do to be active.
“These are incredibly important because physical activity really works in terms of
preventing disease,” said Hicks. “As a society, we're getting less fit, but getting
physical activity is something anyone can do.”
Hicks also says that these guidelines are symbolic of Canada's global leadership in
the field of exercise physiology. Other countries around the world are using Canada's
scientific evidence to produce their own exercise guidelines.
Below, Hicks explains the changes and talks about what they mean for the average
person.
