Every year, thousands of McMaster graduates cross the Convocation stage and make the transition into the workforce.

And for the last 20 years, McMaster’s Alumni Career Services (ACS) has been helping give them the tools to navigate that major life transition.

ACS offers a range of supports, from personalized career counselling and appointments, career assessments and resources, recruitment and networking events, and connections to mentors and industry leaders. McMaster alumni can access these supports for up to five years after their graduation.

“Supporting alumni at that individual level gives them a foundation from which to navigate their career paths with confidence and purpose as they transition to the workplace,” says Arlene Fajutrao Dosen, assistant dean and executive director, student success.

“By giving alumni the tools and experiences they need to succeed, we’re positioning them to not only pursue their aspirations but also go out and create meaningful impact in their communities,” says Karen McQuigge, director, alumni engagement.

As ACS marks their 20-year anniversary, McMaster graduates who have benefitted from its services share what that support has meant to them:

Sophia Mangov, ‘16

Currently works as a test centre and integrated services coordinator at Ontario Tech University

“It’s hard to put into words just how amazing the services provided by the ACS were for me. From résumé writing assistance to interview preparation sessions, networking opportunities, and tailored career events, they offered an array of invaluable support. The one-on-one counseling, in particular, was incredibly beneficial as it was customized to my specific career goals and requirements. Their dedication truly made all the difference.

Remember, success doesn’t always come instantly; sometimes it requires patience. Whether you land your dream job right after university or it takes a bit longer, don’t let the wait discourage you. I speak from experience — it took me some time, but I’m incredibly happy with where I am now.”

Samuel Asare ‘19

Currently works as a rehabilitation facilitator for Head Injury Rehabilitation Ontario

Here Asare shares his experience with Jillian Perkins-Marsh, career counsellor (alumni):

“After graduating from McMaster University, I struggled to identify my interests, programs, or fields. However, with Jillian’s guidance, I was able to take every step with ease. She assisted me with cover letter and résumé writing, capturing the attention of potential employers, and interview preparation. Her support helped me market myself effectively and become competitive in the hiring process of various fields. She also helped me to develop a career action plan, to enter the job market despite my lack of experience.

I recommend considering the guidance of Jillian and the Alumni Career Services. I would not be where I am today without their support.”

Mark Yep, ‘05

Currently works as a business group strategy leader for GHD Digital

“The Career Services at McMaster was very helpful in my career path. It’s important for recent alumni to have access to career support as you need the resources to learn how to land the ideal job from résumé reviews and interview practices, to sometimes just having someone to encourage you to keep going and not give up.

Every hurdle is a learning opportunity so don’t be discouraged if you don’t land your perfect job at the start. Keep going and you’ll find that soon enough you’ll be taking steps towards what you were meant to do.”
