Andrew Louca isn't sure what to expect when he plays in his first game of European
handball Saturday, but that's exactly why he signed up.

Louca, currently working on his master's in biology, likes to do things that he doesn't
usually do – which is good, because the handball tournament taking place at McMaster
this weekend is of the wheelchair variety.

“I really have no idea what it will be like,” said Louca, “but I'm excited to get out there
and try it.”

What's unique about this tournament is that Louca, like most of the participants, is
able-bodied and doesn't normally use a wheelchair. First organized last year, the
tournament is an extension of All Abilities Awareness Day, meant to help connect
Athletics & Recreation with disabled persons on campus. According to organizer
Andrew Pettit, the handball tournament will also help students experience sport the
way others do.

“We're really hoping to open some eyes to how sport is played by those in wheelchairs,”
said Pettit. “I think the day will also be helpful in showing those with disabilities that
Athletics & Recreation is open to working with everyone on campus to ensure there are
no barriers to participation in sport.
