McMaster releases Strategic Research Plan

Following months of consultations with the University community and affiliated organizations, Research for a Brighter World – Strategic Plan for Research 2018 – 2023 has been approved by Senate.

The five-year plan lays out a vision to bolster McMaster’s research mission and to take the University’s research success to an even higher level.

Rob Baker, vice-president, research, says the plan is centred on McMaster’s commitment to research excellence and is informed by a set of core values.

“The plan is designed to nurture our culture of collaboration with our hospital, government, and industry partners; advance our dynamic research enterprise; and guide our development of key, strategic research initiatives of local, national, and global importance, to further advance human and societal health and well-being,” he says.

The plan builds on the University’s paradigm-shifting research, highlighting its diverse strengths, and identifies eight strategic initiatives designed to meet the complex challenges of the future. It also provides a framework to enhance the University’s research enterprise.

Baker says that while the plan – required by a number of external funding agencies – provides guidance and direction, it is not intended to limit researchers in their individual pursuits.

“McMaster’s research reputation has been built on the aggressive pursuit of knowledge across the disciplines,” he says. “Ultimately, our goal is to build on these individual strengths and our interdisciplinary capacity, and live up to our responsibility of placing our knowledge in the hands of those who can put it to its best use, through knowledge mobilization and translation, technology transfer, and commercialization.”
