Celebrating Open Access: Oct. 24, 25
Imagine you could access any scholarly article, use any existing data set in the world, or have access to educational resources – like textbooks – online and free of cost or access barriers.
On October 24 and 25, join McMaster University Library for events and presentations that will focus on how McMaster and other institutions, organizations and agencies in Ontario and across the globe are working to make this vision a reality.
The sessions are being organized in recognition of International Open Access Week (Oct. 22 – 28), which celebrates advances in Open Access, Open Data and Open Education – all part of a worldwide movement to make scholarly publications, data, and a range of educational resources, available free of legal, financial or technical barriers for the benefit of researchers, students, and society as a whole.
Events and presentations include:
- A film screening of Paywall: The Business of Scholarship on Oct. 24 @ 2:30. The film focuses on the need for open access to research and science and, among other concerns, questions the rationale behind the $25.2 billion a year that flows into for-profit academic publishers. The screening will be followed by a facilitated discussion
- Open Day@McMaster, features six sessions on a range of Open issues and will feature speakers from eCampus Ontario who will discuss Open Education and open pedagogy. Catherine Anderson, assistant professor in McMaster’s Department of Linguistics and Languages will also speak on her experience as the first McMaster faculty member to create an open textbook. The book, Essentials of Linguistics, is part of the eCampusOntario collection

Institutions and funding agencies around the world are adopting Open Access and Open Data policies that encourage researchers to make their scholarly work, including research data, freely available online in an open access journal, or a repository such as McMaster’s institutional repository, MacSphere.
