Annual Symposium on Education and Cognition brings together international educators

There’s no better way to explain the phenomenon of the science behind cognitive principles than the annual McMaster Symposium on Education & Cognition.

The two-day event is organized by associate professor Joe Kim, an innovative educator and researcher in the department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour.

This year’s symposium focuses on turning lab findings on memory, attention, and social psychology into practical classroom practice.

“Teachers and students deserve better and need direction for evidence-based practices to truly improve learning,” says Kim.

One of the highlights of the symposium is the free public lecture on July 26th being delivered by Dr. Mike Atkinson, an award winning 3M Teaching Fellow.

Over the years, Atkinson has become increasingly interested in the process of education and has moved to the educational psychology area. How can we teach large classes most effectively? Are there any benefits to using multimedia in the classroom? Do students really learn from instructors who use a variety of engaging techniques?

The symposium is expected to have 200 people attending the international conference including educators, researchers, and policy makers from campus, across Ontario, US and abroad.

Researchers from Western University, Rhode Island College and University of Texas at Austin are set to appear at the symposium.
