Hominin evolution is characterized by a remarkable amount of morphological variability. Although evolutionary processes have clearly acted to shape this diversity, studies of the underlying cause have been limited, with little attention given to non-adaptive scenarios in traditional palaeoanthropology.

Here, I explore the relative roles of genetic drift (non-adaptive process) and natural selection (adaptive process) during the emergence and evolution of our genus Homo, and discuss some recent fossil finds and new research that highlight a complicated interplay of evolutionary forces, working together to produce change over time.
