Two McMaster professors named to Royal Society of Canada

Two McMaster professors have been recognized this year by the Royal Society of Canada for their scholarly and scientific accomplishments.
Gianluigi Botton, an engineering professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and director of the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy, has been named a Fellow in the RSC’s Academy of Science.
“Dr. Botton is an outstanding scientist and engineer who has been conducting phenomenal fundamental research,” says professor emeritus Gary Purdy, who nominated Botton. “He has been the driving force in taking the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy to its highest level. It is fair to say that without his determination, passion and perseverance this centre would not exist and Canada would not be seen as being competitive in this area.”
Fellowship in the RSC represents the highest academic honour in Canada. Fellows are nominated by their peers for membership in one of three bilingual academies in Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and Sciences. Including Botton, who is a Canada Research Chair in Microscopy of Nanoscale Materials, there are currently 72 McMaster-affiliated RSC Fellows.
As well, Guillaume Paré, a professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, director of the Medical Biochemistry Postgraduate Education Program and a Canada Research chair in Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology, has been named a member of the RSC’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.
According to the RSC, the college “provides the RSC with a multigenerational capacity to help Canada and the world address major challenges and seize new opportunities, including those identified in emerging fields.” McMaster now has nine members of the college.
“Professor Botton and Professor Paré join a distinguished cohort of colleagues from across the country who have been recognized for significant contributions within their fields,” says McMaster President Patrick Deane. “I congratulate them both on this prestigious acknowledgement of their accomplishments.”
