[Video] Somali famine ‘one of the most urgent humanitarian crises in the world’

Years of civil strife, rebel warfare and the area's worst drought in more than half a century caused the United Nations to declare a famine in the southern part of Somalia Wednesday.

The declaration of famine, last applied to circumstances in Somalia in 1992, is defined as a crude mortality rate of more than 2 people per 10,000 per day and wasting rates of above 30 per cent in children less than five years of age across and entire region.

Bonny Ibhawoh, associate professor in history and peace studies, says that the situation in the troubled African country is “one of the most urgent humanitarian crises in the world”. He talks more about Somalia below.
