The Career Planning & Employment Centre is hosting its inaugural Summer Job Fair tomorrow, Wednesday Feb. 14.

About 35 employers from Hamilton and surrounding areas will be on hand in the mezzanine of the Ivor Wynne Centre from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. ready to talk and potentially hire students for summer work.

Steven Beierl, employment development co-ordinator, said CPEC decided to launch a job fair devoted specifically to obtaining summer work because students are keen.

“We get a lot of input from students in surveys and they've been telling us they would like to see this,” he said. “Our mandate is to help them make the transition from university to the work world and this is one of the ways to do that.”

Beierl said summer job postings seem to come in on a “just-in-time” basis so his office has been registering new presenters right up to yesterday.

“It's going to be full up,” he said. “We're expecting about 1,500 students so it's going to be quite busy. We want to make it as quick and easy as possible and we're hoping employers will get deluged with lots of resumes.”

The employers who are attending range from the tourism industry to entrepreneurial businesses.

“We're dealing with all kinds of employers in every discipline,” said Beierl. “We're not targeting any type of employer.”

CPEC offers a tip list on how to approach the job fair and provides a list of employers who will be on campus on its Web site.
