Ad hoc committee considering issues of protest and freedom of expression

Following recent events at McMaster and on campuses across North America involving disruptive protests and calls for events to be cancelled, McMaster President Patrick Deane has established an ad hoc committee to consider the issues of protest and freedom of expression.

The group will recommend some guidelines or principles to assist event organizers, participants and the University community in achieving a high level of academic discourse and responding appropriately to protest and dissent.

The group is chaired by Susan Giroux (Associate Vice President, Faculty) and includes faculty members and students who are closely engaged with these issues. The committee will begin meeting soon and further updates will be provided as its work proceeds.
