Nigel Fisher returning to campus for United Nations-themed talk

Alumnus and former United Nations assistant secretary-general Nigel Fisher will deliver an upcoming lecture at McMaster entitled “Elite Communication: United Nations Officials and Reluctant Heads of State.”

The talk will take place on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 10:30 a.m. in Togo Salmon Hall B105. All are welcome to attend.

After completing his graduate work at McMaster, Fisher began his humanitarian career as a teacher in rural Kenya. He recently retired, for the third time, as assistant secretary-general of the United Nations in charge of UN relief for Syrian refugees.

Before that, he directed the UN relief efforts in Haiti after its devastating 2010 earthquake. Fisher also led UNICEF’s post-genocide recovery program in Rwanda and, after 9/11, served as deputy special representative of the secretary-general for relief, recovery and reconstruction in Afghanistan.

In December, the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, presented the 2014 Pearson Peace Medal to Fisher.
