Two new linguistics and languages courses

The Department of Linguistics and Languages is very excited to introduce
two new courses this summer: Linguistic Structure of Modern English 1
and II (Linguistics 1Z03 and 1ZZ3). The courses provide critical
knowledge about the structure of contemporary North American English –
from an understanding of the sound system and word formation, to the
structure of simple and complex sentences, to how meaning and politeness
are expressed. A background in linguistics is not required.

Who would benefit from these courses?

The courses are for anyone interested in contemporary English, particularly:

– advanced speakers of English as a Second Language (ESL)
– anyone interested in the Teaching of English as Second Language (TESL)
– anyone interested in pursuing a career in Education – primary or
secondary education
– anyone interested in pursuing a career in Speech and Language
Pathology or Communication Disorders
– anyone interested in law, literacy, stylistics, language learning,
applied linguistics
