Welcome Notes tradition connects generations at Mac

Whether you’re a Mac grad, current student, faculty or staff, the Office of Alumni Engagement invites you to write a Welcome Note to inspire the Class of 2029.
What began as a heartfelt gesture in the Summer of 2017 has blossomed into one of McMaster University’s most cherished traditions. Welcome Notes, a project started by the Office of Alumni Engagement, connects generations of Marauders through personal letters of guidance, encouragement, and insight.
Every fall, thousands of first-year students arrive on the McMaster campus, greeted by everything from new peers to new courses to new living arrangements. For the last eight years, part of that welcome has also included a note from someone who has walked the same halls and faced the same nerves on their way to finding their own place in the McMaster community.
The Welcome Notes program has reached more than 45,000 first-year students with more than 5,200 unique messages from alumni, upper-year students, faculty, and staff. Notes come from down the street and around the world to offer everything from study tips, to advice on the best spots on campus, to profound reflections on personal growth and the value of community. For alumni, it’s a meaningful way to give back to Mac and reminisce about their student days. For students, it’s a wholesome first sign that they have joined the close-knit McMaster family.
“Make new friends, join clubs, find out where your real passions lie and follow them. It’s not just about the books, it’s about making connections with other students and your teachers. Our world needs hope and compassion, be part of positive changes. Treasure every opportunity to expand your horizons and to make a difference. Carpe diem!” – Paul, ’93.
Whether you’re a Mac grad, current student, faculty or staff, the Office of Alumni Engagement invites you to write a Welcome Note to inspire the Class of 2029! Whether you’re a recent addition to the McMaster community or you’ve been here for years, your words can help inspire Mac’s newest students.
