Gailene Tobin Vandenheuvel appointed CEO of McMaster Innovation Park

This leadership transition marks the beginning of a bold new chapter for MIP’s role in research, innovation, and economic impact


McMaster University is pleased to announce the appointment of Gailene Tobin Vandenheuvel as the new Chief Executive Officer of McMaster Innovation Park (MIP), effective July 14, 2025. 

With more than 30 years of experience in innovation, commercialization, and research park leadership, Tobin Vandenheuvel brings a unique combination of academic depth, public and private sector experience, and strategic leadership to the role. 

She currently serves as Executive Director of  Western Research Parks, where she has led one of Canada’s leading science and technology park networks, overseeing strategic growth, tenant development, and partnerships at multiple locations. A scientist by training and innovator, Tobin Vandenheuvel holds a PhD in BioMedical Sciences with diverse cross-sector experience spanning cancer and cellular immunology, biomedical innovation, natural health products, and research commercialization. Her career bridges academia, government, and industry—advancing Canada’s innovation ecosystem from lab bench to marketplace.

McMaster Innovation Park serves as a bridge between McMaster’s research strengths and the broader innovation ecosystem, housing a wide range of startups, scale-ups, and established companies across life sciences, advanced materials, and emerging technologies. Tobin Vandenheuvel’s experience aligns closely with McMaster’s strategic priorities, including research translation, commercialization, and economic development.

As CEO, Tobin Vandenheuvel will report to the MIP Board and work closely with McMaster University leadership, MIP tenants, and partners across government and industry to guide the Park’s next phase of development. Her first priorities will include engagement with tenants, partners and other stakeholders, strategic planning, and continuing alignment between MIP and McMaster’s innovation goals.
