Sterling Street upgrades underway

Roadwork and sidewalk replacement are underway along Sterling Street, from Forsyth Avenue North to King Street West. This City of Hamilton project, which is expected to continue through the end of July, will involve lane restrictions that may affect vehicle traffic and pedestrian access.

What’s Changing on Sterling Street?

The project introduces several key upgrades designed to improve mobility, safety, and urban functionality:

  • Cycling Infrastructure Enhancements: Buffers and barriers (pre-cast curbs and flexposts) will be installed between motor vehicle and bicycle lanes, offering cyclists added protection.
  • Motor Vehicle Lane Narrowing: A strategic reduction in lane width to help manage traffic flow and encourage safer driving behaviours.
  • Improved Pedestrian Access: Enhancements to crossings and sidewalk connections to make it easier and safer for pedestrians.
  • Raised Intersection: The intersection at Sterling Street and Dalwood Crescent will be elevated, improving visibility and increasing pedestrian safety.
  • Safer Street Intersections: Where possible, intersection radii will be reduced to lower vehicle turning speeds and improve pedestrian crossings.
  • On-Street Parking Adjustments: Some parking spots will be removed to accommodate these changes and optimize the roadway for multi-modal use.

This project aligns with the City of Hamilton’s Complete Streets principles and its’ Vision Zero initiative.
