Access to campus via Main Street entrance closed March 20 to March 25
A section of University Avenue at McMaster’s main street campus entrance between Forsyth Avenue and College Crescent will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, to 4 p.m. on Monday, March 25, 2024.
This closure is required for a Hamilton Health Sciences’ project that includes the setup of a construction crane and lifting of pipe risers on to the roof of the McMaster University Medical Centre.
Access to McMaster University Medical Centre will remain open.
During this time, you may notice increased traffic along Forsyth Avenue leading to the Sterling Street campus entrance; and along Cootes Drive to the west campus entrance.
Please plan for extra travel time as HSR buses, construction vehicles and those driving to campus will use alternative routes.
To keep our community safe, maintain traffic flow and minimize the impact of this closure, the following measures will be taken:
- Digital signs will be installed at campus entrances, redirecting campus traffic to Cootes Drive and Sterling Street entrances.
- Detour signs will be posted throughout campus.
- Traffic control personnel and Hamilton Police will be on site to control traffic.
Pedestrians accessing campus at the Main Street entrance are encouraged to use the sidewalks between Engineering Technology Building and T13.
HSR bus stops located along the closed section of University Avenue will be temporarily relocated for the duration of the street closure. Please visit the HSR website for more information.
Please be aware that the scheduled setup and use of the construction crane is weather-dependent; delays due to high winds or lightning may extend the road closure. Any changes to the schedule will be posted on dailynews.mcmaster.ca.
