Celebrating McMaster Continuing Education’s Class of 2023
A livestreamed virtual ceremony marked a proud occasion for nearly 800 students and lifelong learners at McMaster Continuing Education.
This month, McMaster Continuing Education proudly celebrated the successes of more than 780 graduates at a virtual graduation celebration.
The event, which was livestreamed, incorporated words of welcome and congratulations from university staff, instructors, family and friends, a fireside chat and congratulatory videos for the Class of 2023.
“From the first day of class, you embarked on a path of growth, enrichment and professional transformation,” Provost and vice-president (Academic) Susan Tighe said as she opened the celebration.
“As you move forward, remember that your education is not a destination, but a lifelong journey.”
‘Keep on asking questions’
Tyson Dimayuga, a graduate from the Business Administration program who is now pursuing a master’s degree at York University, says his McMaster education is what made a difference his graduate school application.
Because he was educated abroad, Dimayuga’s path to graduate school was complicated, but his studies at McMaster Continuing Education showed the selection committee he had a Canadian university-level education.
He advised graduates not to let social and cultural barriers deter them from their goals. “Keep on asking questions,” Dimayuga said.
“Maximize your education to create solutions and inspire others to help build a better community for future generations. Seek support from people that have your best interests at heart.”
This is just the beginning
“You know what hard work is and what our changing world needs more than ever: Educated and thinking human beings who are willing to make a difference,” Lorraine Carter, director, of McMaster Continuing Education, said in her speech to graduates.
Keynote speaker Gayleen Gray reminded graduates that graduation is just the beginning, and spoke of a commitment to enhancing society and the world.
“Consider what truly matters to you and what issues resonate with your heart and where your passions lie. In the pursuit of your purpose, continue to align your education and skills with these values,” said Gray, McMaster’s associate vice-president and chief technology officer.
“It’s a timeless truth that anyone can embark on the journey of learning and self-improvement at any point in their lives.”
The ceremony concluded with a fireside chat. “Navigating the Modern Workplace, Adaptability, Innovation and Inclusivity” featured Kim Dej, vice-provost (Teaching and Learning), Gray, Carter, Continuing Education assistant director Dan Piedra, and Continuing Education graduate and organizational development consultant Tracy Gibbs.
This discussion explored the evolving nature of career paths amidst technological shifts and the importance of embracing innovation, building self-confidence and cultivating adaptability in the face of constant change.
