Braley donates $1 million to sports clinic
Businessman David Braley has donated $1 million to McMaster University's sport medicine and rehabilitation centre, a donation the University is calling “incredibly valuable.”
The David Braley Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre at McMaster University will fill a healthcare gap in the Hamilton area by providing outpatient physiotherapy services to 16,000 client visits a year.
“As the owner of the B.C. Lions and a former athlete himself, David appreciates, perhaps more than the average person, the importance of rehabilitation clinics,” said president Peter George. “He also has an abiding interest in medicine so his gift today is a combination of his passion for sport and his commitment to health care. It's a great fit.”
The gift follows a $5-million donation made by Braley last August to McMaster's new David Braley Athletic Centre. The sport medicine and rehabilitation centre will also bear his name.
“I want McMaster's athletes, students, and faculty, as well as the entire community to have access to the finest sport medicine and rehabilitation centre available anywhere in the world,” said Braley. “That facility is right here in Hamilton, and the work being done at the clinic is already making a difference to the quality of life of so many people.”
His gift, he added, gives him the opportunity to support the vision and leadership of Therese Quigley, the University's director of athletics and recreation.
“This is a testament to David's leadership and generosity and to his ongoing support for Mac,” says Quigley. “We're so grateful. A donation of this kind is incredibly valuable to us in terms of the growth and development it brings to the programs here at McMaster.”
The 4,700-square-foot facility, which serves students, faculty, staff and the Greater Hamilton community, will be the centre of excellence for treatment of musculo-skeletal injuries and orthopedic condition.
Its staff holds specialties in advanced sport and manual physiotherapy, osteopathic techniques, athletic, aquatic and acupuncture therapies.
