McMaster Celebrates Latin American Heritage Month with Senator Rosa Galvez

On Wednesday October 9th, Senator Rosa Galvez will be coming to McMaster to celebrate Latin American Heritage Month On June 21 2018, the Canadian Parliament passed a law designating October as Latin American Heritage Month, in recognition of the significant contribution that the Latin American community has made to the social, economic, political and cultural fabric of Canada. Ontario has been celebrating the month since 2015.

Senator Rosa Galvez is the first and only Latin American who has held a seat in the Senate of Canada. She is a Peruvian immigrant who is a civil engineer and is still a member of the Civil and Water Engineering Department (she was department chair from 2010-2016) over at Laval University. Her research looks at pollution and her research spans protection of the Great Lakes as well as the oil spill of Lac-Megantic rail disaster. Senator Galvez is currently the chair of the Senate Committee on Energy, Natural Resources and Environment. (For more information please check out – https://sencanada.ca/en/senators/galvez-rosa/)

1. A Discussion with Senator Rosa Galvez on Women in Science & Politics – 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. – MUSC CIBC

There will be two events this day the first will take place from 10:00am-12:00pm. Senator Rosa Galvez will talk about her journey as a racialized women in engineering, her research and her journey in academia. Following this talk, we’ll have the panel that Nayelli Perez (Engineering Co-op & Career Services) will moderate. The panel will be comprised of Dr. Ana Campos (Biology), Dr. Kalai Saravanamutt (Chemistry), Dr. Juliet Daniel (Biology) and Dr. Sonia Hassini (Civil Engineering).

2. A Discussion with Senator Rosa Galvez to Commemorate Latin American Heritage Month – 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. – HSC 1A4

Senator Galvez will briefly discuss her career in engineering and her journey as an immigrant in academia and her eventual journey into Canadian politics. Following Senator Galve’s talk, a discussion will occur with Dr. Moran-Mirabal (Chemistry) and Rodrigo Narro Perez (Geography and Earth Sciences).
