Dr. Flora Renz, Lecturer in Law, University of Kent. Dr. Renz’s research is concerned with the legal regulation of (trans)gender identities and sexuality in society and broader questions focusing on the interface between structural inequalities, law, gender, sexuality and emotions. Her present research project, “The Future of Legal Gender”, asks whether the UK government should retain the current system of a legal gender assigned at birth.

– This is a prefigurative law reform project that asks whether legal gender status still matters, in what circumstances and for whom. Consequences? Impact?
– How can we move beyond current contentious debates around the role of gender?
– Is it possible to (re)imagine gender within the legal sphere in a way that does not conceive it as either solely oppressive or purely self-determined?
