Background
In March 1997, a loose knit network of McMaster community members met to discuss how to address issues of violence on campus. The founding members – Cathy Bristo/Employment Equity, Cindy Player/SHADO (Sexual Harassment and Anti-Discrimination Office), and Carol Wood/McMaster Campus Ministries Council/Chaplaincy Centre – drafted a funding proposal. With assistance from Elaine Hay, Administrative Assistant, Office of Human Rights & Equity Services (now the Equity and Inclusion Office), the proposal was submitted to then Vice-President of Student Affairs, Dr. Mary Keyes. Dr. Keyes provided the AVN with start-up funds which were augmented by interested campus groups such as the McMaster Student Union, School of Social Work, Peace Studies, and OPIRG.

You are invited to celebrate the stellar work that the AVN has been involved in over the years and to bid it a warm farewell. The work of the AVN will be taken up by many committed campus members who will also be in attendance on July 25.
