Welcome Week move-in August 26 and 27

It’s Go Time for Housing and Conference Services. On Saturday, August 26th and Sunday, August 27th, we will welcome over 3,700 students to their new campus homes.

With the current construction of the Peter George Centre for Living and Learning, Housing and Conference Services have re-invented the strategies of years’ past to accommodate new traffic flows and improve the move-in experience.

“Extensive planning has been dedicated to coordinate the student move-in and make it as efficient as possible for the students and their families,” says Kevin Beatty, Director of Housing and Conference Services. “We are committed to minimizing the impact of this operation on the University’s closest neighbours and to making this event a positive one for everyone involved.”

The plan:

On Saturday, August 26th over 1,100 first-year students will move into North Quad residences Edwards, Hedden, McKay, and Whidden.

  • Vehicles will be directed to enter campus through the Sterling Street entrance or north on Forsyth Avenue and through the gates of Parking Lot H
  • Vehicles are then directed to the marshalling and unloading areas for their residence
  • After unloading, all cars are directed to ‘short-term’ parking opposite the Michael G. DeGroote building, Underground Parking and Lot I
  • To keep the traffic moving, all routes will have clear signage and staff at key locations

We will be sharing the Sterling Street entrance with employees, emergency vehicles, delivery trucks and HSR buses. Employees will be directed to Lot B closest to Wilson House. Athletics’ will be directed north on Forsyth Avenue Forsyth Avenue and will enter campus at Stearn Dr. south of the Ivor Wynne Centre. All Athletics’ Teams/Coaches/Buses will be directed to Lot H.

On Sunday, August 27th North Quad residences Brandon, Les Prince, and Woodstock, and all five West Quad residence buildings (Bates, Mary E. Keyes, Matthews, Moulton, Wallingford) will move-in.

  • Residents moving into Bates and Moulton will enter off Cootes Drive and be directed to holding areas for their specific residence and then proceed to unloading zones
  • Residents moving into Mary E. Keyes, Matthews and Wallingford will enter campus off of Main St. West and be directed north on University Avenue, through the center of campus, and proceed to check-in and unloading zones. All cars are then directed to ‘short-term’ parking in Lots I, M, or P

University employees who must attend campus using the Sterling Street entrance should try to avoid the large volume of traffic moving north to south through campus and move-in parking in Lots C, D, G, H and the Underground. These employees are encouraged to park in Lot B opposite Wilson House, Lots I and K. View these parking lots on Parking’s website.

Employees are asked not to park in the following areas Saturday and Sunday:

•    Lot H. All areas and along the roadway between Alumni Field and the 10-acre field. All parking spaces plus the roadways will be used for move-in traffic

•    Lots G and along Stearn Drive opposite the main entrance to the Commons Building/McKay Hall and Lots C and D opposite the David Braley Athletic Centre/Ivor Wynne Centre, MUSC and the Michael G. DeGroote Building
