Think twice before accepting Windows 10 upgrade

Microsoft has made a change to Windows update that is likely to cause many Windows-based computers at McMaster to attempt to upgrade to Windows 10. This “upgrade” may disrupt your normal operations.

This upgrade is likely to appear as a “recommended” option in Windows Update beginning today and depending on your setting may self-initiate. It is strongly recommended that you carefully consider the implications of accepting or rejecting this upgrade and consult your local IT support before installing it.

Those areas which receive desktop support from UTS are advised to delay the upgrade until further testing is conducted. There are many different computer applications used at McMaster that have not yet been tested for compatibility with Windows 10.

If a user does decide to accept the upgrade, they should pay close attention to the results of the compatibility test as a “pass” for hardware may not in fact mean that applications are compatible. Users who accept the upgrade and then encounter problems can “rollback” the change within 30 days.
