Darlene Lim says it’s not a matter of “if” humans get to Mars, but “when.”

The Canadian-born Lim heads up scientific exploration for the NASA Ames Research Center in California. She’ll be on campus July 21 to speak to a group of high-performing youth enrolled in the SHAD program about space exploration and science.

SHAD is hosted at 12 university campuses across Canada, where it strives to develop innovative and leadership potential in Grade 10, 11 and 12 students.

Students in SHAD spend a summer month in an intensive program focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

Lim, who attended the program as a teenager, will also speak about her work at two volcanic sites in Idaho and Hawaii, and introduce two McMaster experts who are part of her international team: Geography and Earth Sciences’ Greg Slater and postdoctoral fellow Allyson Brady.

McMaster will livestream the talk on Facebook starting at 9:30 a.m.
