Wampum strings acknowledge we’re stronger together

Indigenous knowledge-keeper and and Six Nations researcher Rick Hill presented the University with wampum strings at this year’s Convocation ceremonies.

Hill, who was presented with an honorary degree at the June 15 Social Sciences Convocation, gave the symbolic gift to Chancellor Suzanne Labarge.

The strings represent Hills personal commitment to indigenous studies at McMaster: one represents McMaster and its sources of knowledge, the other the sources of indigenous knowledge.

The uniting of the strings acknowledges that the two sources of knowledge are important for the future.

Hill has contributed immensely to the resurgence of indigenous knowledge at home and abroad, as a practicing artist, cultural historian, teaching elder, researcher, community leader, curator, art historian and speaker.
