The Marauders women's basketball team upset the undefeated Brock Badgers 63-48 in front of a home crowd for Marauder Weekend Jan. 26.

McMaster just celebrated its 26th annual Marauder Weekend with a full set of excitement and victories for the Marauders faithful and alumni in attendance.

On Friday, January 25 the varsity volleyball teams played a pair of crucial matches versus the Western Mustangs. The women’s team needed a win to catch up to Western in the OUA standings and came through with a four-set win (25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 25-8).  Team captain and fifth-year senior Meagan Nederveen was named the player of the match for helping McMaster to the win.

The men’s volleyball team swept the Mustangs in three sets (27-25, 25-23, 25-20) to remain undefeated in the OUA and move closer to clinching first-place in the standings. First-year middle Danny Demyanenko was named the player of the match for the Marauders.

Saturday, January 26 saw the men’s and women’s basketball teams hit the court at the Burridge Gym to face Brock. The women had a daunting challenge as the Brock Badgers were undefeated in the OUA. A little Marauder Weekend magic saw McMaster dominate the Badgers 63-48 In an upset that thrilled the fans in attendance. Senior Hailey Milligan was the star of the game with 21 points and 16 rebounds, but it was a total team effort by the Marauders squad.

On the men’s side, Brock looked like it wanted to spoil the party, and led McMaster at halftime. Perhaps borrowing some energy from the earlier women’s win, the Marauders exploded in the second half and cruised to a 94-75 triumph. Third-year forward Taylor Black led a balanced Mac attack and was named the player of the game.

Marauders volleyball welcomed Windsor on Saturday night for the final home events of the weekend, and the Mac women picked up where they left off and beat the Lancers in straight sets (25-15, 25-13, 25-19). Fifth-year co-captain Shannon McRobert was named player of the match, although teammates Kaillee Stock and Kierstyn Bakker would have been deserving choices also.

The men’s team paid tribute to its senior players before the Windsor match and then proceeded to beat the Lancers in four sets (23-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-17).  While it was a showcase match for the seniors, freshman Stephen Maar was named the player of the match. McMaster needs one more win to clinch first-place in the OUA and hosting rights for the OUA final-four playoff event.

With a perfect record over the six home events, the 2013 Marauder Weekend was a massive success both on the court and off, where alumni and community fans saw some of the best that McMaster University athletics has to offer.
