A McMaster University study refutes the popular belief that Vitamin E prevents strokes and heart attacks.

The multinational Heart Outcomes Prevention Evaluation (HOPE) study, conducted by cardiologist Salim Yusef, a professor of medicine at McMaster, appear in the Jan. 20 New England Journal of Medicine.

In the same issue of the medical journal, Yusef reports in a separate research paper that the drug Ramipril could prevent one million deaths from heart attack and stroke annually. The American Medical Association listed this discovery as one of the top ten of 1999.
