The squat might be the single best exercise.

So says Stuart Phillips, a professor of kinesiology, who is featured in a New York Times video, online now.

Phillips also talks about weightlifting for runners and cyclists and says lifting lower amounts of weight to fatigue is just as beneficial as lifting heavy weights.

The video interview is featured on columnist Gretchen Reynolds’ blog Well.

Kinesiology department chair Martin Gibala also spent time with staff from the New York Times recently, who featured his research online in May.

The video story, The 20-minute workout video, explores Gibala’s work on high-intensity interval training, or HIIT – an approach to exercise that reduces workout time by increasing the intensity of exercise performed.
