Damiano Panetta, a member of McMaster’s varsity swim team, is currently competing at the 23rd Deaflympics taking place in Samsun, Turkey where he is expected to compete in the 200 freestyle, 400 individual medley and relay as one of six members of the Canadian swim team.

For Panetta, it will be the second time he has competed at the Deaflympics. He participated as a 16-year-old in Bulgaria where he achieved personal bests in the pool.

“I am very excited and proud to compete in this international event because not only am I representing my country but I am competing with and surrounded (by) people who understand what it is like to be a deaf athlete.”

Panetta will be entering his third year of study in Biotechnology as of September 2017.
