McMaster's 1999 United Way campaign has been one of the most successful ever.

The total money raised has reached $162,841, just short of the campus goal of $165,000. It was the first time in many years that the campus campaign did not have a significant drop in contributions, according to Tina Horton of the organizing committee.

The 1999 campaign saw an increase in donors, from 542 in 1998 to 638, and in leaders, from 37 to 43.

The campaign saw a concerted attempt to continue the involvement of current employees and those who are retired. Massive community support for special events, bringing together staff, students and faculty, was also seen.

Among the most successful events run on behalf of the campaign were: the Inter-Residence Stair Climb ($4,933); Holiday Bingo ($1,711); and Casual Loonie Days ($1,116).

For their dedication, Horton, who works in the Office of the Registrar, and George Round, a professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, were named two of 11 Employee Campaign Co-ordinators of Excellence at the United Way's 1999 Evening of Recognition and Celebration Awards.

Other members of the organizing committee were: Al Spence, mechanical engineering; Judy Howson, finance; Cheryl Gies, electrical & computer engineering; Terri Wetton, accounts payable and travel; Jan Nurnberg, DocuCentre; Chris Sylvester, Office of Analysis & Budgeting; and Nancy Weller, Office of the Registrar and Analysis & Budgeting.

Overall, McMaster was one of the top achievers in education through its campaign support.
