This summer, Hamilton-born Gary Spearin steps into two roles at the McMaster Museum of Art: artist and guest curator.

As artist, he presents an installation of his own vibrant abstract paintings, titled ‘iNifiNiTi’.

As curator, he has selected works of art from the Museum’s vaults, for a complementary exhibition, titled ‘PAINTING BEYOND a body of views’.

Both exhibitions are on view now until August 18, 2012. Spearin will be in attendance at a public reception on Friday June 1, from 6 – 8 p.m.

iNifiNiTi began in 2007, when Spearin started exploring time through painting. He produced paintings conceived as an optical device to visualize the dynamics of time and our experience and perception of it. Eighty-seven paintings from that ongoing series are included in Spearin’s presentation at McMaster.

PAINTING BEYOND a body of views is both a complement and an extension of Gary Spearin’s iNifiNiTi installation. Spearin continues to explore the enigma of things, this time going beyond painting into other media, and drawing on works from the McMaster Museum of Art collection. Two Spearin works are presented alongside works by artists from around the globe: Marcel Duchamp, Richard Hamilton, Alfredo Jaar, Leon Kossoff, and Art & Language (a collaborative group of artists).
