Students, alumni can surf new site for career opportunities

The University's first cyberspace career fair is up and running. Established by the Career Planning and Employment Centre and funded by the McMaster Students Union (MSU), the site at http://careers.mcmaster.ca/ will be active until Sept. 29. The site is available to students and alumni, who can access it using their student ID and MUSGI number.

Sarah Goodhope, co-ordinator, Virtual Career Fair, says companies that are already Web-based and used to receiving applications by e-mail especially like the concept. “It has also proven to be popular with business that cannot make it to the campus Career Day,” she says. Many, she adds, are participating in both events.

The campus Career Day will be held on Sept. 21 at the Ivor Wynne Centre from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Goodhope says the site is one of the first University-run online career fairs in Canada. “It is more common in the United States.” Aside from the University of Saskatchewan and Humber College, “there aren't many universities in Canada doing it.”

The cyber fair has a number of advantages over the campus event. It gives students the opportunity to research a company at their own speed and at more convenient times, and they can return as often as they wish.
